In this volume, the author aims to clarify the reasons of the Southerners and their true aspirations, in order to better understand the Southern Confederacy and shed light on the real causes of the conflict. The American Civil War, in fact, led to the birth of the modern United States, arising from the opposition between the Confederacy—with its uneconomical and obsolete “peculiar institution” (slavery)—and the Union. The industrial and economic boom of the Northern states placed the “Old South” in a position where it had to adapt or be erased from history (or resist and, by seceding from the Union, become an independent nation), developments that also reflected the clash between capitalism and an agrarian society. | Niccolò Ferrari 2013
